Three postal staff suspended for not delivering Paswan's greeting cards

Bihar: Three postal department employees in Hajipur were suspended on Wednesday for not delivering greeting cards Union food and consumer affairs minister Ram Vilas Paswan had sent to judicial staff in his constituency.

The New Year greeting cards Paswan sent to advocates and judicial staff of the sessions court were found lying at the Bar Council Building in Hajipur.

Paswan represents Hajipur in Lok Sabha.

Postal superintendent Umesh Chand Prasad suspended postmaster of Hajipur’s main post office Lallan Ram, public relations officer Raj Kumar Shrivastava and postman Deonarayan Mahto in this regard.

“Based on complaints from some people over non-delivery of greeting cards sent by the Union minister and Hajipur MP, action has been taken against the three,” Umesh confirmed to The Telegraph from Hajipur. He said an enquiry has been ordered and a team set up to deliver the undelivered cards.

According to the LJP’s Hajipur unit president (vigilance cell) Awadesh Kumar Singh, the MP had sent around 2,000 New Year greeting cards to be delivered to advocates and judicial staff in Hajipur.

While some cards were delivered, around 400 were found abandoned on the third floor of the bar council building.

They bore names and addresses of those they were meant for. Inside was a picture of the architect of the Constitution, B.R. Ambedkar, and Parliament House and bore the names Paswan and his wife Reena at the bottom.

Awadesh said Paswan sent the cards in his capacity as Hajipur MP and not as Union minister.

Sources said the cards arrived from Delhi on December 18 and were meant for delivery on or before January 1, but even after over 10 days, many cards had not been delivered.

The local LJP leader said: “The matter came to light a few days ago after come persons informed LJP workers about a sack full of greeting cards lying abandoned on the third floor of the Bar Council Building near Gandhi Chowk in Hajipur.”

Attempts to contact Paswan at his ministry or residence proved futile. Sources said a few days back, during a visit to his home constituency, Paswan had enquired from his party workers about greeting cards he had sent to select people in his constituency.

On Wednesday, members of the postal department staged an agitation to demand revoking of the three suspensions.
